Revive

I played in a home game this weekend and split for first place after a poker hiatus of months. I didn't play well in the least, but luckily for me, my friends are even worse. I was able to build up a formidable chip stack when we were down to 3-handed play, but when we were heads-up, things took a turn for the worse. I lost the majority of my stack and ended up severely short on chips. I battled back and took the lead once more, albeit by a small margin. Then we decided to split first place winnings and hit a kareoke bar without finishing.

Usually, I wouldn't be caught dead in a kareoke bar. To be honest, I didn't stay very long. However, it was rather amusing to have a friend go up and sing an R. Kelly song, especially when he doesn't sing at all and he didn't know the song.

The best part was his pause in "singing" to say: "Who says that in a song?" Of course, he was referring to R. Kelly's lyrics. Funny stuff.

I've got an exam today for a continuing education course I'm taking. I didn't study in the least, but I'm pretty sure I can pass it. It's mostly a review of stuff I already know. I'll be glad to have it done so I can go on with my summer.

Long weekend coming up. I'll be drinking Brava all day, every day, at a buddy's camp. Should be a good time. I still love to beer up.

Until next time.

A little more than 60%...

I have a few things to follow up with regards to that previous post...

First, my goal to turn a few dollars into enough to send me on my golf trip playing online poker failed miserably. Low-limit Sit n' Go's are boring as shit, so after turning my small bankroll into about $30, I amped up my game and started playing $20 tables. I lost it all fairly quickly after that. Oh well. I had more fun losing at those games than winning at the $2 games. That's what it's about for me...fun! At least I didn't feel like I was wasting my time.

Second, I'll just pay for my golf trip the old fashioned way. That's right, by credit card!

Last, we have a winner in the College Humor search for the hottest college girl! I don't know about you, but I'd consider letting her be with me.

My disregard for playing serious poker is evident, but sometimes I run across promotions that sound so good that I feel like turning into one of the "serious" players. There are a few at 888 Poker Ashes right now that sound pretty sweet. I'm not sure that it's my desire to play poker or my hankering for cross country travel that is luring me in though. Either way, I'm game for trying my luck at the tables again.

We've just endured one of the coldest and longest winters ever up here, and I am ready to see new sights and take advantage of cheap travel rates. It would be fun to hit the live tables again too. I havent played poker in an actual casino for quite some time.

Despite all of my talk of not playing seriously, I still love to play on regular occasions. I just play it for different reasons now. I play strictly for fun. It's fun to play online poker for the experience of playing many hands and playing a different crowd, and it's fun to play live to get drunk and joke around with friends! Either way, I like it!

I realize that I've been pushing a little bit more poker content related material into my posts. Like most people, when I miss something I talk about it a lot. I think I'll make some plans to have a little home game soon. Playing with my friends is fun because I can play like a jackass and still have an awesome chance of winning. Yes, they are that terrible.

Time to hit the spreadsheets.

Now watch me turn this money into booze!

After nearly a year away from the virtual tables, I randomly logged into Full Tilt and found that there was still a little over $3 in my account. After turning that $3 into a little more than $7 in a small 6-handed sit-n-go, I was struck with a few ideas.

First, these small limit sit-n-go's are absolutely hilarious, and it's extremely gratifying to bull-doze the competition without much effort. Picture fighting Glass Joe at the beginning of Punch-Out! That's what it feels like!

Now, the missus and I are on a very strict budget (as I'm sure most can relate). So, I'm going to see if I can turn this small amount of money into enough to support my annual golf outing at the end of May (I'll need about $500). The plan is to play and win one small limit sit-n-go every day. Just one. I tend to get bored very easily playing these for a duration of longer than one game. While playing bored, I tend to do whatever I can to amuse myself, and that usually results in the donkeying-off of all my chips.

I used to play sit-n-go's regularly at the $20, $30, and $50 levels. I'm going to limit myself to playing in the $10 or less levels for this little challenge, making slow but hopefully steady progress.

I'll keep you posted. In interesting news, were you aware that Collegehumor was doing their "America's Hottest College Girl" search again? Well, you are now! You're welcome.

Man-crush

Every time Barack Obama speaks I like him more. Whether lifting restraints on stem cell research, sticking it to the AIG executives, or mending fences with Iran, I'm continually impressed.

I've read recently that he was also in the process of filling out his March Madness brackets, picking UNC to win as he did last year. I'm not going to lie, I'd really like to hang out with this guy. Have a couple of drinks and watch the games. Maybe eat some wings and hit on waitresses.

I'm going to send him this letter:

Dear President Obama,

I hope you're having an awesome time as President. I bet it's a pretty sick job. Having access to your own plane and secret service agents must be cool. Also, I bet you don't wait in any lines to get into the clubs, am I right? With that said, do you even have to pay for anything you do? I know you would insist on paying anyways, but I would totally take advantage of some free drinks, meals, or rounds of golf, and I like to think you would too!

What's up with Area 51? If I were elected Prez., checking that shit out would be near the top of my list of priorities. Just sayin'.

I should get to the point because I know you're busy saving the world. I just wanted to say that I think you're doing a terrific job and to tell you that I know of an awesome place we could get some wings and cajun fries to watch the championship NCAA game. They have a garlic dip for the fries that you can't get enough of. Also, they have like 40 different beers on tap. Canadian beers. They'll probably put you on your ass, but don't worry, I'll take care of you. We'll cab it back to my house and you can crash in the spare room. You'll have to sleep with my dog though, 'cause she kindof thinks that room is hers lol.

Let me know what you think brohoob, shoot me a text. Also, while you are here, we can discuss your adoption of Canada so that we can vote for you in a few years.

I appreciate the hard work. The first round is on me!

Your friend,
Matt

p.s. check out my blog archives, you'll be impressed by my collection of hot girl pics. See you in a few weeks!

Peaks and Troughs

I ran into a woman I used to play home games with last week and she asked me if I still played poker regularly. I told her I didn't and I asked the same question of her. She replied that she makes a weekly trip to the casino (300km away) to play every wednesday.

She then asked me if I wanted a regular game again, implying she hosted one on the weekend. I told her I didn't, and that was it. It's funny, some people just can't get enough, even after years of playing the same game.

I was thinking about this and I started to wonder how many people are still as heavily into Hold'Em as we all once were. There was a time when I couldn't wait for the next game. Now, I don't even miss it. There are still many who await the next game, but how long will that last?

I've noticed a dramatic decline in poker shows on tv. Have we reached and passed the peak of poker popularity? I think we have. Will it ever again be as popular as it was just a few years ago? Maybe. I can picture it running on a business cycle; expansion, contraction, peaks and troughs.

Of course there is the issue of our current global economy being in the shitter. Being an economist I won't get started on this, but suffice it to say that it has a significant negative impact on poker popularity. I have many friends who are pinching every penny now in fears of losing their job. They are not about to pony-up even $10 for a friendly game, and I don't blame them.

I don't have a point to this narrative. I was just contemplating how some people can let the game go while others can't, and how this affects the popularity of the game as a whole. Is there more people leaving the game than entering? The fact remains, poker was here long before me and it will be here long after.

I'll still play on occasion. The last game was at the New Years party I attended. I took it down against 8 others in a drunken stupor. I'm convinced that I play much better drunk. It was a good time.

The next game will be this weekend most likely. Saturday festivities at Casa del Matt. On this day, I will be turning 27. I'm "pushing 30" as we would call it. I'm not too concerned about the number, I'm still as good-looking as ever.

Oh, and we got a fresh blast of snow in the last couple of days. We're still averaging -25 Celcius and I broke the zipper on both of my winter coats. I'm not getting them fixed though, I'm just going to buy a new one next year anyways.

Sorry for not bringing the funny today. I have my good days and my bad days, just like everyone else!

Later!

This is me freezing.

It's currently -29 Celcius here with the windchill factor. Balls cold. I've been shovelling snow for what seems like a week straight.

Considering I weigh about 110 pounds, I'm seriously concerned for my personal well being. I have no protection against these harsh conditions. No protection that is, besides my cunning wit and will to persevere. Is that enough? We'll find out on the next 60%.

It's Thanksgiving Somewhere

Attention citizens of America: Happy Thanksgiving!

In case you didn't know, in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. We celebrate by getting together with family and eating a lot of food, including but not exclusive to: Turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, possibly some pie, and other various vegetables that I disregard in place of cramming enough turkey into my stomach to put me in a 3 day coma. Then when I wake up I make myself a turkey sandwich.

During the day, most Canadians take their dog-sleds to the biggest igloo available and tell stories of how polite we've been to other people. We enjoy a nice lunch of ham covered in maple syrup and phrase everything we say in the form of a question by simply adding 'eh?' to the end of each sentence.

I should probably mention that the previous paragraph was a joke, just for you naive people out there. In truth, we don't do any of that. Just the big meal with family.

With that said, have a great Thanksgiving! I'll be at work in case you were wondering.
